Today, I wanted to try something new with my football cleats, so I thought, why not give them a chrome look? I saw a few guys online doing it, and it looked pretty cool, so I decided to give it a shot myself.

First, I gathered all the stuff I needed. I got some chrome spray paint from the hardware store, some painter’s tape, and an old newspaper to protect my workspace. I also made sure I had my cleats ready. They were a bit dirty from the last game, so I gave them a good clean first. I scrubbed them with soap and water, making sure to get all the dirt and grass off. Once they were clean, I let them dry completely.
Next, I started taping the parts of the cleats I didn’t want to get painted. This was a bit tricky because I wanted to keep the soles and the insides unpainted. I carefully applied the painter’s tape, making sure it was sticking well so the paint wouldn’t seep through. It took a while, but I wanted to do it right.
After the taping was done, I set up my workspace outside. I spread the old newspaper on the ground to catch any overspray. Then, I took my chrome spray paint and gave it a good shake. I read the instructions on the can, which said to hold it about 12 inches away from the surface and spray in even strokes. I started spraying the cleats, making sure to cover all the areas I wanted to be chrome. I did a few thin coats, letting each one dry a bit before applying the next. It was important not to spray too much at once to avoid drips.
Once I was happy with how they looked, I let the cleats dry for a few hours. I wanted to make sure the paint was completely set before I removed the tape. It was tempting to peel it off right away, but I knew patience was key.
Finally, the moment of truth. I carefully removed the painter’s tape. I was pretty stoked with the results! The chrome finish looked awesome, and the parts I taped off were still clean and untouched. There were a couple of spots where the paint had bled a little, but I managed to touch those up with a small brush.
I couldn’t wait to try them out on the field. The next game day, I wore my newly chromed cleats, and they definitely turned some heads. Not only did they look cool, but they also felt great. The whole process was a fun little project, and I was really happy with how it turned out.

Things I Used:
- Chrome spray paint
- Painter’s tape
- Old newspaper
- Soap and water (for cleaning)
I gotta say, doing this myself saved me a bunch of money compared to buying pre-chromed ones. Plus, it was a fun DIY project. If you’re thinking about giving your cleats a new look, I definitely recommend trying this out!
