Okay, so today I decided to finally get a good grasp of the rules of volleyball. I’ve watched it on TV, even played a bit in the park, but I never really knew the rules, you know?

First, I grabbed my laptop and started searching online. I found some official-looking websites, but honestly, they were kinda boring. Lots of big words and complicated diagrams. So I switched to YouTube.
Much better! I found a few videos that were more my style – simple explanations, some with animations, some with real people showing the moves. I started taking notes, just jotting down the basics.
The Basic Stuff
- Scoring: Okay, so it’s rally scoring, which means someone gets a point after every serve. Games usually go to 25, but you gotta win by 2 points.
- Serving: You gotta serve from behind the line, and it can’t touch the net (that’s a let serve, and you get to do it again… sometimes).
- Touches: Each team gets a maximum of 3 hits to get the ball over the net. And you can’t hit the ball twice in a row (unless one of those hits is a block).
- Rotation: This was the part that always confused me. Basically, after you win the serve back, your team rotates clockwise. So everyone gets a chance to play all the positions.
I spent a good hour just watching videos and reading different explanations. I even paused and rewound some parts a few times to really get it. Then, I decided to test myself.
I found some online quizzes, and, well, I didn’t ace them, but I did better than I expected! It’s one thing to read the rules, another to actually apply them.
Finally, to really make it stick, I grabbed a volleyball and went outside. I practiced serving (mostly hitting the fence, haha), and I imagined playing a game, thinking about the rotations and the 3-touch rule.
So, I wouldn’t say I’m an expert now, but I definitely feel like I understand the game a whole lot better. It’s more than just hitting a ball over a net! Next step: actually playing a proper game with some friends. Wish me luck!
