Okay, so, lately I’ve been diving deep into the world of old-school VHS tapes. Specifically, I’ve been hunting down tapes released by Turner Home Entertainment. It’s a bit of a nostalgia trip, you know? Reminds me of being a kid in the 80s and 90s, when these tapes were everywhere.

I started by making a list of all the Turner releases I could find. I used the internet to pull together a rough list, but honestly, it was kind of a mess. A lot of conflicting information out there. It seems like anything before 1987 was actually put out under the MGM Home Entertainment label. Good to know. Turner Home Entertainment, Inc. was founded on July 29, so obviously anything before that wasn’t them. It was a bit tricky, but I managed to separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak. I started with 1987 and went from there.
Then, I started hitting up online marketplaces. Lots of scrolling, lots of searching. I found quite a few common titles, but some of the rarer ones were tough to track down. I realized this was going to take some time.
My Growing Collection
Here’s what I’ve managed to snag so far, just from 1998:
- Shelley Duvall’s American Tall Tales Legends: Casey At The Bat (1998 VHS) – This one was a lucky find!
- Hercules (1998 VHS) – Classic animated movie. Had to have it.
- Casper Meets Wendy (1998 VHS) – Not the best Casper movie, but hey, it’s part of the collection.
- Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella (1998 VHS) – A musical gem!
I also found a couple of others from a collection of VHS previews put out by Turner. That was a cool find and gave me some more titles to look out for. There was also “Adventures From The Book of Virtues” and “Jonny Quest”.
Then I managed to find a 1989 release of “The Thing [1951]” by Turner Home Entertainment, though it had a price tag, I just had to have it in my collection.
I also stumbled across a 1994 UK Rental Tape of “Sleepless In Seattle” with an original VHS opening from Walt Disney Home Video (United States) – Mickey’s Magical World (1988). This was a surprise, but also a treat, because I enjoy collecting a few Disney VHS as well.

The Hunt Continues
It’s been a fun project, and it’s definitely not over. There are still tons of Turner tapes out there that I’d love to get my hands on. I’m particularly interested in finding some of the more obscure releases. I have a wishlist now that I’m working off of. And I’ve even started keeping track of prices, just to see what things are going for. It’s kind of turned into a whole thing. I’m in it for the long haul!
Anyway, that’s my little adventure in VHS collecting so far. It’s a work in progress, but I’m enjoying it. Maybe I’ll update you all when I find something cool. Wish me luck!
