Okay, so I’ve been digging into youth volleyball lately, specifically trying to see if the boys and girls play differently. It’s something I’ve been curious about for a while, and I finally decided to do a little hands-on research.

First, I gathered a bunch of game footage. This was actually trickier than I thought! Finding good quality, full-game videos of youth volleyball isn’t super easy. I ended up scouring YouTube and a couple of other video sites. I specifically looked for games featuring players around 12-14 years old, both boys and girls, to keep things somewhat consistent.
Next, I started watching, and boy, did I watch a lot of volleyball! I created a simple spreadsheet to keep track of what I was seeing. I decided to focus on a few key things:
- Serving styles: Were they mostly overhand? Underhand? Jump serves?
- Attacking: How often did they go for powerful spikes versus softer tips or placements?
- Defense: Did they seem to prioritize digging (getting low to save hard hits) or blocking at the net?
- General court positioning: Did they stick rigidly to positions, or was there more fluidity?
I spent hours, seriously, hours, watching these games and jotting down notes. I’d watch a set, rewind, watch again, pause, make notes, and repeat. My wife probably thought I was going crazy, muttering about “good rotation” and “weak-side attacks” to myself.
After watching about five games for each group (boys and girls), some patterns started to * is needed more observations to have a final conclusion.
This was just my little personal project, and it’s definitely not a scientific study, but it was a fun way to spend a few evenings and satisfy my curiosity. I learned a lot just by paying close attention and trying to be objective.
