Okay, so I decided to spice up our usual volleyball practice with some fun camp-style games. I wanted to boost team morale and work on some skills without the usual drill sergeant routine.

First, I gathered everyone around and explained the plan. The excitement was visible; they were totally tired of the same old drills.
Setting the Stage
I divided the team into smaller groups. This is way better for keeping everyone engaged, no one’s just standing around.
Game 1: Pepper Power-Up
- Instead of regular pepper (pass, set, hit), I added a twist.
- After each successful sequence, the pair had to do a silly action – like a quick dance or three jumping jacks.
- The girls found it pretty funny at first, then they were a little tired.
- It sounds simple, but it really forces you to focus and control the ball, plus it’s way more fun.
Game 2: Target Practice
- I set up some targets (cones, hoops, even just spots on the wall) around the court.
- The idea was to serve or hit the ball to specific targets.
- Each target got a different point value, making it a bit of a competition.
- This game improve players a lot on their aim and control, but it feels less like a “drill” and more like a game.
Game 3: Scramble!
- This one’s a bit chaotic, but in a good way.
- I yelled out a number, and that’s how many players had to be involved in the next touch.
- So, if I yell “3!”, three players need to get under the ball before it goes over the net.
- It really forces everyone to communicate and move quickly. It’s also hilarious watching them scramble to figure it out.
The Result
The whole session turned into a blast. Everyone was laughing, communicating better, and actually improving their skills without even realizing they were “working.” I noticed a definite boost in team spirit, which is exactly what I was aiming for. I will definitely be incorporating more of these camp-style games into our practices. The girls love them.
