Okay, so I’ve been meaning to get into beach volleyball for a while now. I mean, who doesn’t love the beach, right? Sun, sand, and some good old-fashioned competition. So, I decided to dive in headfirst, using the SEA Games as my ultimate inspiration. Here’s how it went down.

Finding a Partner & Getting Started
First things first, I needed a partner. I hit up my buddy, Mark, who’s pretty athletic. Luckily, he was totally game. We’re both beginners, so we knew we had a long way to go, but hey, everyone starts somewhere, yeah?
We found a local beach with some volleyball nets – score! – and just started messing around. We didn’t have fancy gears, just shorts, and T-shirts. No shoes, just sand between our toes. It was rough. Seriously rough. We were whiffing serves, shanking passes, and basically flailing around like a couple of beached whales.
Practice, Practice, Practice (and a lot of Failing)
We committed to practicing a few times a week. We watched some YouTube videos of the pros, you know, trying to pick up some tips. We tried to copy their moves, but… well, let’s just say it wasn’t pretty. My serves were either landing in the net or sailing way out of bounds. Mark was having trouble with his sets. We got sand everywhere. It was a mess, but a fun mess.
- Serving: So. Many. Nets. I felt like I was just donating points to the imaginary opponent.
- Passing: It’s harder than it looks! The ball has a mind of its own.
- Setting: Mark’s sets were… unpredictable. Let’s leave it at that.
- Hitting: When I actually connected, it felt amazing. Those moments were rare, though.
Small Victories & Big Lessons
Slowly, ever so slowly, we started to see some improvement. We started having short rallies. I managed to get a few serves over the net and in bounds. Mark’s sets became slightly less erratic. We even managed to win a few points against some other casual players who were practicing nearby.
It was a huge confidence boost. But, more importantly, we learned a ton. We learned that communication is key. We learned that positioning matters. We learned that diving for a ball in the sand is way harder than it looks on TV.
Still a Long Way to Go (But We’re Having Fun!)
Are we SEA Games ready? Absolutely not. Not even close. But are we having fun? Absolutely! We’re getting exercise, enjoying the beach, and learning a new sport together. We are sunburned, sandy, and a little bit achy, but we’ve made progress.

Beach volleyball is tough. It takes a lot of practice, coordination, and athleticism. But it’s also incredibly rewarding. We’re still beginners, but we’re hooked. We’ll keep practicing, keep learning, and who knows, maybe one day we’ll actually be good. For now, we’re just enjoying the journey, one sandy step at a time.
