Okay, so today I decided to really dive into the rules of volleyball. I mean, I’ve watched it, even played a little pick-up, but I never really understood all the ins and outs. So, I figured, why not? Let’s do this!

First, I grabbed my laptop and started with a basic Google search. You know, “volleyball rules.” Nothing fancy. I found some official-looking websites and started reading.
Basic Gameplay
- Scoring: Okay, rally scoring. Got it. Every time the play stops a point has been score, I thought it had to be when serving.
- Rotation: This one was a little tricky at first. I actually had to draw a little diagram on a piece of paper to visualize how players move around the court after they win a point on serve. Clockwise, it seems simple now.
- Serving: Foot faults! I didn’t even know those were a thing. I always thought you were good, as long the ball went over.
- Number of Players: Six on the court, okay. I knew that, but it was good to confirm.
- Hitting limits: Three touches per side.
Then I started looking at some of the more detailed rules, like, what constitutes a “lift” or a “double touch.” Honestly, some of those calls seem super subjective! I watched a few YouTube videos to see examples of these violations in action. It helped, but I still think I’d have trouble calling them in real-time.
I even tried to understand the libero rules. That special player with the different colored jersey? Yeah, they have all sorts of restrictions on what they can and can’t do. I think I get the gist of it, but I’m definitely going to need to watch more games with a critical eye to really understand their role.
After a couple of hours of reading and watching videos, I felt like I had a much better grasp of the rules. I even printed out a cheat sheet to keep handy. I’m not saying I’m an expert now, but I definitely feel more confident about understanding what’s going on during a game.
Next step? Putting this newfound knowledge to the test! I’m planning to watch some volleyball matches. Maybe even join a casual game, and hopefully I will not look totally lost!
