Okay, so let me tell you about this little project I got myself into the other day. I’ve been wanting to learn more about the Paralympics, and sitting volleyball caught my eye. So I thought, “Why not dive in and see what this sport is all about?”

First things first, I needed to get a basic understanding of the sport. I started with some simple searches and, oh boy, did I find some cool stuff. I learned that it’s not just regular volleyball but played sitting down – it’s way more intense. I found out that there are athletes with different kinds of physical impairments, like amputations or hemiplegia. They’re all competing at the highest level. One of the most interesting things I came across was about a player named Morteza Mehrzad. Can you believe it? This guy is 2.46 meters tall! He’s the tallest sitting volleyball athlete. The athletes at the Paralympics compete in a lot of different impairment groups, such as amputee, cerebral palsy, visual impairment, spinal cord injuries, intellectual disability, and something called “les autres.”
I also started looking into the upcoming 2024 Paris Paralympics. I found some names to watch out for, like Allison Lang from Team Canada’s women’s team and Heather Erickson, who I learned had a killer match against Brazil in a semifinal game. It got me even more pumped to watch the games live! I realized there is a schedule for it.
Now, after getting all hyped up from my research, I figured I needed to try this out myself. I didn’t have any official equipment, but I cleared some space in my living room, grabbed a regular volleyball, and sat down on the floor. Let me tell you, it’s a lot harder than it looks!
- Trying to move: First of all, moving around on your butt is a whole different ball game. I tried to scoot and slide, but I was super slow. It made me realize how much strength and agility these athletes must have.
- Serving: Serving was another challenge. I tried a few underhand serves, and getting the ball over the net while sitting down is tough! I definitely need to practice this more.
- Playing a “match”: I roped my roommate into trying it with me. We just tried to keep the ball in play, and it was a total mess. We were laughing so hard, but it gave me a tiny glimpse into how much teamwork and coordination is needed for real sitting volleyball.
After my little experiment, I went back to watching some videos of actual matches. Seeing how quickly the players move, how they dive and set the ball – it’s just incredible. My clumsy attempts really highlighted the skill and dedication these athletes have.
So, what did I learn from all this? Well, sitting volleyball is way more than just a sport. It’s a testament to the amazing things people can achieve, no matter their physical limitations. My little living room session was a fun but very humbling experience. I have so much respect for these Paralympic athletes. I’ll definitely be tuning in to watch the 2024 Paris Paralympics, and maybe I’ll even try to find a local club to practice with some real players. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll be able to serve without falling over!
