Okay, so yesterday I decided to learn how to score a volleyball game. I’ve always watched games and vaguely understood what was going on, but I wanted to really know.

First, I grabbed a scoresheet and a pen. I found a blank scoresheet online—pretty easy to find, just did a quick search. I printed it out, thinking it would be easier to learn with a physical copy in front of me.
Then, I opened up YouTube and found a recorded volleyball match. I figured watching a game while trying to keep score would be the best way to learn. I chose a college game, thinking it would be a good level—not too fast, not too slow.
Next, I started filling in the basic info on the scoresheet: team names, date, and starting lineups. That part was straightforward, like filling out a form.
- The first few points were a bit of a scramble. I kept pausing and rewinding the video to make sure I marked everything correctly. Service aces, kills, blocks… it all seemed to happen so fast!
- I fumbled a bit with the rotation tracking. I am always forgetting to circle which postion is the player.
- Then,I finally understood. It is pretty easy.
My First Try!
After a couple of games, I felt… well, not like an expert, but definitely more confident! I managed to keep up with the scoring for most of the match, and I even started to anticipate what marks I’d need to make next.
I still have a lot to learn, especially when it comes to substitutions and timeouts, but I made real progress! Now, I can’t wait to watch another game, and practice some more.
