Okay, so I decided to get a better handle on the whole volleyball officiating thing. I mean, I’ve watched enough games, but being responsible for actually running one? That’s a different story.

First, I dug out the rulebook. It’s, uh, dense. Lots of specific scenarios and hand signals. I spent a good chunk of time just reading through the basics – the roles of each official, the flow of the game, that sort of thing.
Getting My Hands Dirty
Then, I found some online videos. Much easier to digest than the rulebook, honestly. I watched a bunch of clips showing proper positioning for the R1 (the “up” referee), the R2 (the “down” referee), the line judges, and the scorekeeper. It started to make a bit more sense when I could actually see it happening.
- R1 (Up Ref)This is the big boss on the stand.
- R2(Down Ref)This is the one on the floor on the opposite side.
- Line Judges. These guys watch the lines.
- Scorekeeper.Keeping track of it all.
Next, I roped in some friends for a practice game. I mostly focused on being the R1. It was… chaotic. I blew the whistle a lot, probably for some things I shouldn’t have, and definitely missed some calls I should have made. My friends were pretty patient, though. We laughed a lot, and I slowly started to get a feel for the rhythm of the game.
After our practice game, I focused on learning the hand signals, so I watched more online videos.
I realized pretty quickly that knowing the rules is only half the battle. The other half is being confident and decisive. You have to make calls quickly and clearly, even if you’re not 100% sure. And you have to be able to handle players and coaches who might disagree with your calls. That’s definitely something I’m still working on.

So, yeah, it’s a work in progress. I’m definitely not ready to officiate a professional match or anything, but I feel like I’ve got a decent foundation now. I plan to keep practicing and maybe even take an officiating clinic sometime soon. It’s a lot more complicated than it looks from the stands!
