Okay, so I’ve been trying to get into “real volleyball games” lately, and let me tell you, it’s been a journey! I thought it would be simple, you know, just show up and play. Boy, was I wrong.

Finding a Game
First off, I had to actually find a game. I started by asking around. Some friends play casually, but nothing serious.
- Checked out local community centers.
- Browsed some online groups and forums.
I finally found some at local community. Bingo!
The First Game Jitters
My first game was…intense. Everyone seemed to know what they were doing. I felt so clumsy.
- Serving: I totally whiffed the first few serves. Embarrassing! But, I eventually got the hang of it. Just tossing and hitting underhand.
- Passing: The ball comes at you fast. My forearms were red and sore, but it was worth it. I did mess up a good amount of times.
- Setting: This was tough. I tried to get under the ball, but it is harder than it looks.
- Hitting: Okay, this was the fun part! Even though I didn’t spike like a pro, I managed to get a few hits. It felt good to connect with the ball.
I played terribly at the start but as time goes on I feel like I am improving.
Gear and Stuff
I didn’t even think about gear, starting out. I quickly realized I needed some basic stuff.
- Knee pads: A must-have. Saved my knees so many times.
- Good shoes: I started in some old gym shoes. Bad idea. Way better now.
Learning the Ropes (and Rules!)
There’s more to volleyball than just hitting the ball. I had to learn some actual rules and strategies.
- Rotations: Figuring out where to be on the court was confusing at first. I’m getting it, slowly but surely.
- Calling the ball: Shouting “Mine!” is important, so you are not bumping into others.
I still make mistakes, like touching the net, I forget a lot.
Getting Better (Slowly)
I’m definitely not a pro, but I’m improving. It’s all about practice, I guess.
- I’ve been going to some beginner clinics.
- Practicing my serve in my backyard when the weather is good.
- Just playing more games, even if I mess up.
It’s been a fun and humbling experience. I’m sore, I’m bruised, but I’m hooked. I’m going to keep playing and keep getting better. This is my new thing, I guess!
