Okay, so today I wanted to try out some “minor games” in volleyball, something I’d heard about but never really put into practice. I figured it would be a good way to spice up our usual practice routine and maybe work on some specific skills in a more fun way.

Getting Started
First, I gathered the team and explained the concept. Basically, minor games are like mini-versions of volleyball, with modified rules or court sizes to focus on certain aspects of the game. I decided to start with a game called “short court,” to improve quick reactions.
Short Court Chaos
We divided the court in half, making it much smaller than usual. The goal was to play a regular game, more or less, but with this reduced space. My team was super energetic. At the beginning, everybody started bumping the ball with another teammate, and it became chaotic.
- It was intense! Balls were flying everywhere.
- We were diving and scrambling like crazy.
- There were a lot of laughs and near misses.
King/Queen of the Court
After playing with Short Court for 30 minutes, next, I wanted to do the King/Queen of the Court.
Two players start on one side, and the other players form a queue. The goal is to score to cross the net and become “king”. It was a fast-paced game, and everybody enjoyed it a lot.
Wrapping Up
We ended the practice with some regular scrimmaging, and it was noticeable how much the minor games had sharpened everyone’s reflexes and ball control. I like to mix some fun at the end of every practice, because it’s important to keep the good vibes.
Overall, I’d say today’s experiment with minor games was a success! It added some variety to our practice, helped us work on specific skills, and most importantly, everyone had a blast. I’ll definitely be incorporating more of these into our future sessions. It’s amazing how much you can achieve when you’re having fun while training.
