Okay, so today I decided to work on my jump serve in volleyball. I’ve seen the pros do it, and it looks so powerful, so I figured, why not give it a shot?

I started by watching some videos online. Just to get a basic idea of the form, you know? It looked simple enough watching the best of the best.
First, I worked on my toss. It sounds simple, but its super important. The toss needs to be high enough and a bit in front of you so can get some power.
- Toss the ball way higher than you think you need to.
- Make sure to toss it out in front of you, so you can approach it.
After that, the approach is basically like you’re going for a spike. I practiced my three-step approach: left, right, left. This is the hardest part of jump serving.
I then jumped and swung my arms, trying to hit the ball with an open hand. It felt awkward at first, and most of my attempts ended up in the net, or went way out of bounds. It was rough.
My arm got tired pretty quick, too. Jump serving is a lot more physically demanding than a regular serve!
Eventually, after about an hour of trying, I managed to get a few decent serves over the net. They weren’t perfect, but they had some good pace on them. I was pretty stoked!

Key Takeaways
I still need a lot of practice, I really do! But it was fun to try something new and start to get the hang of it. I think, with some more practice, I can actually make this a weapon in my game.
For anyone else thinking of trying the jump serve, my advice is to be patient. It’s not easy, but it’s definitely doable!
