Okay, so I’ve been meaning to get more active, you know? Sitting at a desk all day is, like, the worst. So I decided to join some sports. Sounds simple, right? Hah!

First, I brainstormed. What sports did I even like? I used to play volleyball in high school, but that was… a while ago. I also thought about basketball, but my knees aren’t what they used to be. I have listed them like below:
- Volleyball
- Basketball
- Badminton
- Table tennis
Then I googled “adult sports leagues near me.” That was a rabbit hole. So many options! There were leagues for everything: kickball, dodgeball, even ultimate frisbee. It was kind of overwhelming.
I narrowed it down based on what seemed fun and, let’s be honest, what wouldn’t kill me. I settled on two: a beginner’s volleyball league and a social badminton group, which I used to be familar with. Figured that was a good mix of something I knew and something maybe a little easier on the body.
Next up, I signed up. The volleyball league had an online registration, which was pretty straightforward. Filled out the forms, paid the fee, boom, done. The badminton group was a bit more casual – just an email to the organizer. He replied pretty quickly and said to just show up on Tuesday. Cool!
Then came the gear scramble. I realized I didn’t own, like, any athletic shoes. My old ones were ancient. So, I hit up the sporting goods store. Tried on a bunch of shoes, did the little jog-in-place thing, and finally found a pair that felt okay.
Tuesday rolled around, and I was honestly a little nervous. Haven’t played sports in ages! I showed up to the badminton thing, and it was… actually really fun! Everyone was super chill, and it was more about having a laugh and getting some exercise than being super competitive. I sweated, I laughed, I even hit the shuttlecock a few times! (Mostly in the wrong direction, but hey, progress.)

Volleyball Time
The volleyball league started the following week. It was a bit more… intense. People were definitely there to play. I fumbled a few serves, missed some spikes, and generally felt like a baby giraffe on ice skates. But, you know what? My team was supportive, and I started to get the hang of it again. Slowly.
So, yeah, that’s where I’m at. Two sports, varying levels of skill (or lack thereof), but overall, I’m enjoying it. It’s been a good way to get out of the house, meet some new people, and get moving. Still sore, though. Very sore.
