Okay, so the other day I was watching my niece’s volleyball game, and it got me thinking – is volleyball really an “invasion game”? I mean, I’ve heard that term thrown around, but I wanted to dig into it myself.

My Little Investigation
First, I jumped onto Google. Just typed in “invasion games definition” to get a basic understanding. It seemed like the core idea was about two teams trying to, well, “invade” each other’s territory to score. Think basketball, soccer, stuff like that.
Then I started thinking about volleyball specifically. You’ve got the net dividing the court, right? And each team is trying to get the ball over that net and onto the other team’s side. Sounds kinda “invasion-y,” doesn’t it?
I kept reading, and I found some articles and discussions online. Some people were arguing that, yeah, volleyball totally fits the definition. They were pointing out that you’re constantly trying to penetrate the other team’s defense, find openings, and get the ball to land in their space.
- You try to get the ball to land on the opponent’s court.
- You want to get around the blockers.
- You’re working to put ball in open space.
But then I saw other folks saying, “Hold on, not so fast!” They were arguing that in “true” invasion games, players can physically move into the opponent’s territory. Like, in basketball, you can dribble the ball right up to the basket, right? But in volleyball, you’re stuck on your side of the net.
My Takeaway
So, after spending a good chunk of time reading and thinking, here’s where I landed. Volleyball has strong elements of an invasion game. That whole idea of attacking the other team’s space with the ball is definitely there. But the physical restriction of the net makes it a bit different. I guess you could say it’s like a “modified” invasion game, or maybe a hybrid of sorts. It is unique, and has it’s own catagory, but I can see why it would fit the description.
It was actually a pretty fun little rabbit hole to go down! Made me think about the game in a whole new way. And hey, it gave me something to chat about with my brother-in-law at the next family gathering. Win-win!
