Okay, here’s my blog post about how I learned to play volleyball, written in a casual, conversational style, and using basic HTML tags:

So, I decided I wanted to learn how to play volleyball. I’d always watched it and thought, “Hey, that looks like fun!” But actually doing it? Whole different story.
First thing I did was watch some videos online. I’m tellin’ ya, YouTube is great for this kinda stuff. I just searched for “beginner volleyball drills” and, boom, tons of stuff popped up. I watched a few to get an idea of the basics, like how to serve, bump, and set.
Then, it was time to actually, you know, touch a volleyball. This was the hard part. My first serves went, like, two feet. Embarrassing! And bumping? Forget about it. The ball went everywhere except where I wanted it to go.
I knew I needed practice, and I needed someone to practice with. So, I roped in my buddy, Mark. He’s not exactly a pro, but he’s played before, so he was a huge help.
- We started with just serving back and forth. I focused on getting the ball over the net. That was my only goal at first.
- Then we moved on to bumping. Mark would toss the ball to me, and I’d try to bump it back. Slowly, very slowly, I started to get the hang of it. It’s all about getting under the ball and using your forearms, not your hands.
- Setting was next. This is where you kinda “pop” the ball up in the air for someone else to spike. I felt super awkward at first, but Mark kept reminding me to use my fingertips and make a triangle shape with my hands.
We practiced like this for a few weeks. Just messing around, really. We weren’t keeping score or anything. We just try to hit the ball!
Getting Better (Slowly!)
After those few weeks, I felt like I could actually play a little bit. We joined a super casual, beginner-friendly league at the local park. It was mostly just a bunch of other people who were also learning, so it wasn’t intimidating at all.

My first game was…interesting. I definitely messed up a lot. But I also got a few good serves in, and I even managed to set the ball a couple of times! It felt awesome.
I’m still not great, obviously. But I’m having fun, and I’m getting better. That’s all that matters, right? It is a good game to do exercises!
The main thing I learned is that it just takes practice. Lots and lots of practice. And having a friend to practice with definitely makes it more enjoyable.
So, that’s my volleyball journey so far. If you’re thinking about learning, I say go for it! Just be prepared to be terrible at first. We all start somewhere, right?
