Alright, so the other day, I was trying to explain to my buddy how volleyball scoring works, and I realized, even though I’ve watched plenty of games, I wasn’t 100% sure on all the details. So, I decided to do a little digging and get it straight, once and for all. Here is what I did:

Figuring Out the Basics
First, I jumped online to get the basic rules. Find some resources talking about needing 25 points to win a set, and you have to win by two points. Okay, that part I kind of remembered, but it was good to see it confirmed.
Looking Deeper into win by 2 rules
Then I dug a little deeper into this “win by two” thing. I checked out some official-looking rulebooks. They explained it pretty clearly – like, if the score is 24-24, you keep playing until one team gets a two-point lead. So, it could go to 26-24, or 27-25, or even higher! Some of Websites metioned that there’s often a cap at 30 points, meaning whichever team hits 30 first wins, even if they don’t have a two-point lead. Learned!
Regular Sets vs. Deciding Sets of Game
Next, I wanted to know if all sets were the same. I found out that in most matches, you play best-of-five sets. The first four sets go to 25 points (win by two), but that fifth set, if you even get there, is different. It only goes to 15 points, but you still need to win by two! I also see some best-of-three matches. Short games!
Putting It All Together
- To win a regular set, you need 25 points, and you have to win by two.
- If it’s tied 24-24, you keep playing until one team is up by two points.
- Sometimes, there’s a cap at 30 points, so the first team to 30 wins, even without a two-point lead.
- In a best-of-five match, that fifth “deciding” set only goes to 15 points (but still win by two!).
- In a best-of-three match, that thrid “deciding” set only goes to 15 points (but still win by two!).
So yeah, that’s basically what I did to get to grips with volleyball. Now if you ask me again, I can answer you perfectly! Hope you enjoy the game as I do!
