So, I’ve been getting into volleyball lately, and I gotta tell you, it’s a lot more complicated than it looks from the sidelines. One of the first things I wanted to get straight was how the games are structured. Like, how many periods are in a volleyball game? I remember watching games and hearing about sets, but I never really understood what that meant until I started playing.

I hit up Google, and man, there’s a ton of info out there, but a lot of it was super confusing. Some places said two or three periods, others said six, and I was just scratching my head. It turns out, they call them “sets,” not periods. I also had no idea that in volleyball each game isn’t even measured by time length like most of the sports, but by points. Who would know that?
Here’s the breakdown as I now understand it:
- Sets, not Periods: First off, forget the word “period.” In volleyball, they’re called “sets.” Each set is a separate chunk of the game.
- Points, not Time: Unlike basketball or football, volleyball sets aren’t timed. You play until one team scores a certain number of points.
- Usually 25 Points to Win: Most of the time, a team needs to score 25 points to win a set. But here’s the kicker – you gotta win by at least two points. So, if it’s 24-24, you keep playing until one team gets a two-point lead.
- Best of Five: In most matches, you play the best of five sets. That means the first team to win three sets wins the whole match.
- Rally Scoring: This one was new to me. Every time there’s a rally (basically, every play), someone scores a point. If the team that served wins the rally, they get a point. If the receiving team wins, they get a point AND they get to serve next.
- Timeouts and Breaks: I noticed these can affect how long a set lasts. Teams get a certain number of timeouts, and there are short breaks between sets, too.
Once I figured all this out, watching and playing volleyball became way more fun. I could actually follow what was going on! It’s funny how a little bit of knowledge can make such a big difference. I am still confused by some rules, but I guess I’ll learn them step by step. I will keep updating my blog once I discover more.
Anyway, I hope this helps some other newbies out there. Volleyball is a blast, and once you get the hang of the basics, it’s even better!
