Okay, so the other day I was watching a volleyball game with my friend, and he asked me, “Hey, how many games do they actually play in volleyball?” And I was like, “Uh… good question!” I mean, I knew it wasn’t just one game, but I wasn’t 100% sure on the specifics. So, I decided to do a little digging.

First, I grabbed my phone and started searching online. I found some confusing stuff at first, talking about “sets” and “matches,” and I was getting a little lost.
My Little Research Journey
- I started by typing “how many games in volleyball” into the search bar.
- Then I scrolled through a bunch of websites. Some were super technical, and some were just plain wrong!
- Finally, I found a couple of reliable sources that explained things clearly.
It turns out, they usually call them “sets,” not “games.” And a “match” is the whole thing – like the best-of series.
So, what I figured out is that most volleyball matches are played as best-of-five sets. That means the first team to win three sets wins the entire match. Each set goes to 25 points, but you gotta win by two points. So, it could go 25-23, or even longer, like 27-25 or 30-28, if it’s really close!
But here’s a little twist: if the match goes to a fifth set (because each team has won two sets), that last set is only played to 15 points, still with the two-point win margin. Makes it a bit quicker for that final, deciding set.
I also learned that some matches, especially in younger leagues or tournaments, might be best-of-three sets. So, the first team to win two sets takes the match. Each set is the to 25 points except the third set, it is the same as the fifth set I mentioned before.
So, to answer my friend’s question (and my own!), it’s not about a specific number of games, but rather the number of sets. Usually, it’s best-of-five, meaning a match could have anywhere from three to five sets played. I felt pretty good after figuring all this out!
