Hey everyone, today I want to talk about something I’ve been messing around with lately – how long a volleyball game actually lasts. I got curious about this the other day when I was watching a match, and it seemed like it was going on forever.

So, I started digging around to figure it out. Turns out, there’s no set time limit for volleyball. It’s not like soccer or basketball with a ticking clock. Instead, it’s all about points.
First, I watched a bunch of volleyball matches – pro ones, college ones, even some beach volleyball. I timed each set, and it seemed like most of them took around 20 to 30 minutes. You know, back and forth, some crazy rallies, the usual stuff.
Then I learned that to win a set, a team needs to score 25 points, but they also need to be ahead by at least 2 points. So, if it’s 24-24, they keep going until one team gets that 2-point lead. That can definitely drag things out!
For most matches, it’s like a “best of 5 sets” kind of deal. So, the first team to win 3 sets wins the whole match. If you do the math, that means a match could last anywhere from, like, 75 minutes to over 2 hours. Some of those matches I watched went the full 5 sets, and yeah, they were long!
Here’s the breakdown of what I found:
- No time limit: A volleyball game goes until a team wins enough sets.
- Points-based: 25 points to win a set, but you need a 2-point lead.
- Best of 5: Usually, the first team to win 3 sets wins the match.
- Set duration: Each set seems to average around 20-30 minutes.
- Total match time: Can be anywhere from 75 minutes to over 2 hours. Also, the match can last up to three hours.
I even checked out beach volleyball, and those games tend to be a bit quicker, usually best of 3 sets. But indoors or on the beach, it’s all about that point battle.
It was pretty cool to dive into this and figure it all out. Next time I watch a match, I’ll have a better idea of what I’m in for. Anyway, just wanted to share my little investigation with y’all. If you’ve ever wondered about volleyball game times, hope this helps!
