Okay, so the other day I was trying to figure out how long I’d be stuck at my niece’s volleyball tournament. I mean, love the kid, but those things can drag on forever if you’re not prepared. So, I did what anyone would do: I started digging around for some info.

First, I watched a few matches, just casually timing them with my phone’s stopwatch. I wasn’t super scientific about it, just getting a general feel.
My Little Experiment
- Match 1: This one was pretty quick, wrapped up in about 65 minutes. It was a 2-out-of-3 set kind of deal, and one team just dominated.
- Match 2: This one was a bit longer, closer to 80 minutes. More back-and-forth, went to three sets, you know the drill.
- Match 3: Now this was a marathon. It was a 3-out-of-5 set match, and it felt like it went on all day. We’re talking close to two and a half hours (150min), easy.
After my super informal timing experiment, I figured those matches were pretty much in *,yep, pretty much nailed it.
So, what did I learn? Basically, if you’re heading to a volleyball game, expect to be there for at least an hour, maybe an hour and a half. If it’s one of those longer, best-of-five situations, you better pack a snack…and maybe a good book. You could be there for a while!
