Okay, so I’ve been getting into volleyball lately, and I was super curious about how a game actually gets going. Like, what’s the official way to kick things off? I did some digging and then tried it out with some friends. Here’s how it went down:

The Very Beginning: The Coin Toss
First things first, you gotta figure out who serves first. It’s not just a “you go first, no you go first” kinda deal. We learned that there’s usually a coin toss. So, we grabbed a quarter.
One of my buddies called “heads,” and it landed on tails. I was on the “tails” team, so we got to choose. You get to pick either to serve first or which side of the court you want to start on. We went with serving first, figuring it might give us a tiny edge.
Getting into Position
Next up, everyone had to get into their spots. This part felt a little confusing at first, but we figured it out.
- The server: This is the person who starts the whole thing. They stand behind that back line – you know, the one at the very end of the court. You can’t step over it when you serve, or it’s a fault.
- Everyone else: The rest of the serving team spreads out on their side of the court. There are specific positions, but honestly, we were just making sure we weren’t all bunched up. The other team (the receiving team) does the same on their side.
The Serve Itself
This is where the action starts! My friend, who was serving, took a deep breath and tossed the ball up. You’re supposed to hit the ball with one hand, over the net, and into the other team’s court. It’s harder than it looks!
She got it over – phew! – and the other team bumped it up in the air. That’s when the real game started, with everyone trying to hit the ball back and forth without letting it touch the ground.
What Happens After the Serve
We learned that once the ball is served, it’s all about keeping it in play. You can hit it up to three times on your side to try and get it over the net. The other team does the same. This back-and-forth goes on until someone messes up – like hitting the ball out of bounds or letting it drop.

If the serving team wins the rally (meaning the other team makes a mistake), they get a point and serve again. If the receiving team wins, they get a point and they get to serve next. It’s like a little game of tug-of-war for who gets to be in control.
It was really cool to see how a simple coin toss and a serve turn into this whole dynamic game. We definitely messed up a bunch of times, but hey, that’s how you learn, I started to play like professional volleyball players!
