Okay, so the other day I got to thinking, how high is a basketball hoop, really? I mean, we see those NBA guys dunking all the time, and it looks so easy on TV. So, I decided to find out for myself.
First, I grabbed my tape measure. You know, the old-fashioned kind, not one of those fancy laser things. Then I headed out to my backyard where my hoop is. It’s one of those adjustable ones, but it’s been a while since I messed with the height.
Get Started
I stood under the hoop and started measuring from the ground up. Now, I’m no engineer, but I figured the best way to do this was to measure to the bottom of the rim and then add the thickness of the rim itself. Sounds simple enough, right?
Measuring Process
- First try, I got about 9 feet. But the rim was a bit wobbly, so I knew that wasn’t quite right.
- Second try, I made sure everything was tightened up, and measured again. This time, I got closer to 9 and a half feet. Still not 10.
- Then I remembered reading something online about how the standard height is supposed to be 10 feet. So I grabbed a ladder to get a better look.
- Turns out, my adjustable hoop had slipped down a bit over time. With a little bit of adjusting, and some help from my neighbor (thanks, Bob!), we cranked it up.
- After that I measured again from the ground up with a ladder, making sure to account for the rim’s thickness.
Result
Finally, after all that, I measured one last time. And guess what? It was exactly 10 feet! Just like the pros. It’s funny how something that seems so obvious can still be a bit of a project to figure out. But hey, now I know for sure, and I even got a little workout in the process!
So, there you have it. A basketball hoop is 10 feet high. It took a bit of doing, but it’s always fun to get hands-on and figure things out for yourself, right?
