Today, I want to share my experience with trying out a heavy basketball, both indoors and outdoors. I’ve always been a basketball fan, and I’ve played with regular basketballs for years. But I got curious about these heavier balls and how they might change the game, so I decided to give it a shot.

Getting the Ball
First things first, I got myself a heavy basketball. It’s noticeably heavier than the standard ones, you can feel the difference right away. It’s the same size, just denser. I was pretty excited to see how this thing would feel on the court.
Indoor Practice
I started indoors, in my local gym. Right off the bat, I noticed I had to put more effort into dribbling. The ball didn’t bounce as high, so I had to push it down harder and faster. It was a bit of a workout just keeping the ball moving!
- Shooting: This was tough! Getting the ball to the hoop took way more strength. My usual shooting form didn’t work, I had to use my whole body to heave that thing. My shots were falling short at first.
- Passing: Similar story here. My passes were slower and lower. I had to really focus on putting some muscle into it, especially for longer passes.
Outdoor Adventure
Next, I took the heavy ball outside to a concrete court. The rougher surface made things even more interesting.
- Dribbling: Outdoors, with the uneven surface, dribbling was even harder. The ball felt even heavier, and I had to stay low and work to keep control.
- Shooting: The wind was a factor too. That heavy ball caught the wind more than a regular one, making it harder to aim. I had to adjust my shots even more.
- Passing: Passing on the concrete wasn’t too different from indoors, just a bit more challenging to control the bounce.
What I Learned
After a few sessions, I definitely felt the difference. My arms and shoulders were more tired than usual. It’s definitely a different kind of workout. I can see how using a heavy basketball could help build strength and improve ball-handling skills over time. But, it wasn’t fun honestly. It was tiring and didn’t improve my game much in the time I used it for.
Would I recommend it? Maybe, if you’re really serious about improving your strength and control. But for a casual player like me, it’s not something I’d use all the time. It’s more of a training tool than something for a regular game. It was an interesting experiment, though! I’m glad I tried it, but I think I’ll stick to my regular basketball for now.
