Okay, so today I wanted to get some volleyball practice in, but I didn’t want to just do the same old boring drills. I wanted something fun, something that felt more like playing a game. So I came up with a few ideas and decided to give them a shot.

Setting Up the ‘Court’
First, I grabbed some cones and set up a makeshift court in my backyard. It wasn’t regulation size or anything, but it was good enough for what I had in mind. I made sure to have a clear “net” area, even though I didn’t have an actual net. I just used my imagination for that part!
The Drills
- Pepper Partner Challenge: I started with a classic pepper drill. I practiced passing, setting, and hitting with my partner. We added point to make it more exciting.
- Target Practice: Next, I set up some targets (buckets, actually) in different spots on the “court.” The goal was to serve or hit the ball and try to land it in the buckets. This one was tougher than it looked! I quickly that it take time to be good.
- King/Queen of the Court (modified): Since I didn’t have a full team, I modified this drill. I worked on hitting and serving from different spots on the court, trying to hit specific zones. Each zone was score.
- Short Court Scramble: I shortened the court and focused on quick reactions and short, controlled passes. This was great for working on my reflexes and ball control. It also helped me practice setting and passing in tighter spaces. I have to speed up.
The Results (and Fun!)
I spent about an hour doing these drills, and honestly, it felt more like playing than practicing. I got a great workout, improved my skills, and had a blast doing it. The target practice was my favorite – it was super satisfying when I finally nailed a serve into one of the buckets!
By mixing things up and making it feel like a game, I stayed motivated and pushed myself harder than I probably would have with regular drills. Plus, it was just way more fun! I’ll definitely be doing this again.
