Alright, so I wanted to try something new and fun today – blackout poetry. I’ve seen it around, and it always looked super cool. The idea is to take a page of text, like from a newspaper or a book, and blackout words to create a poem. I decided to give it a shot, and guess what? I found this article online about football. Seemed like a good place to start. I love watching football on weekends, so why not make it into art?

First, I printed out the article. It was full of game stats, player names, and all that stuff, I just want the texts, I don’t need numbers. After I printed it out, I grabbed a black marker and started to skim through the text. The goal was to find words that stood out to me and could form a poem. I went through it line by line.
- Find interesting words: I looked for words that caught my attention.
- Mark potential poem words: I circled some words that I thought would work well together.
- Connect the words: I started to see how these words could flow together to create a poem.
It was actually harder than I thought! I would find some cool words, but then the spacing between them wouldn’t make sense for a poem, so I started to cross out a few words here and there to form a basic idea of what I wanted my poem to be. Then I had to think about how to connect them in a meaningful way. It took a few tries, and a lot of scribbling, but I finally found a combo that I liked. I’ve always enjoyed the creativity, I even start to do it everyday!
Once I had my words picked out, it was time to blackout the rest. I carefully colored over all the other words with my marker. This part was kind of relaxing, I started to color outside of the lines once or twice. It’s a bit like coloring, but with a purpose, right?
Here’s what I ended up with from the article:
Sports, live, player, news, maintained a blackout policy, victory.
It’s short, but I think it’s pretty neat. It gives you a whole new perspective on the text. I might even frame this one. It’s a fun little reminder that you can find art in unexpected places. If you’re looking for a new creative project, I definitely recommend trying blackout poetry. It’s a blast!
