Okay, so today I decided to get a better handle on volleyball, like, really understand the game. I’ve watched it on TV, sure, but I wanted to break it down.

First, I grabbed my laptop and started with some basic online searches. You know, just “volleyball rules” and stuff like that. I found a bunch of official-looking websites, but honestly, they were kinda dry.
So, I switched to YouTube. Much better! I found some videos that explained the game in a more visual way. I watched a few of those, pausing and rewinding to make sure I got the hang of things like serving, bumping, setting, and spiking. Those are the key moves, it seems.
Key Things I Learned
- Serving: That’s how you start the play. You gotta hit the ball over the net and into the other team’s court.
- Bumping: This is like a basic pass, using your forearms to control the ball.
- Setting: Usually the second hit, it’s like setting up the ball for someone to spike it.
- Spiking: The big, powerful hit to try and score a point.
I was getting there by *, I dug a little deeper and learned about the different positions on the court. There’s the setter (the playmaker, kinda), the hitters (the ones who spike), and the libero (a defensive specialist who wears a different colored jersey).
After that, I focused on the scoring. It’s a bit confusing at first, but basically, you need to win by two points. And there are these things called “sets,” which are like mini-games within the bigger match.
Finally, I watched some actual game footage, trying to identify all the things I’d learned. It was way easier to understand what was going on after doing all that research. Before, it just looked like a bunch of people hitting a ball around!

I’m still no expert, but I definitely feel like I have a much better grasp of volleyball now. Maybe I’ll even try playing it sometime!
