Yesterday, I decided to try my hand at creating an “ed sport garden,” which basically means I wanted to grow some stuff I could eat alongside my usual flowers and plants. I’ve always liked the idea of having fresh veggies right outside my door, so I thought, why not give it a shot?

Getting Started
First, I picked a spot in my backyard that gets a good amount of sun. It’s a little corner that was mostly just grass and a few sad-looking weeds. I figured it was as good a place as any to start.
Next, I grabbed my shovel and a pair of old gardening gloves. I’m no expert, so I just started digging. I turned the soil over, pulled out the weeds, and broke up any big clumps of dirt. It was actually kind of a workout!
Planting the Goods
After I got the soil all ready, it was time to plant. I went to the local garden store and picked up some seeds and a few small starter plants. I got some lettuce, tomatoes, and peppers – things I eat all the time. Oh, and some herbs, like basil and chives, because why not?
- Lettuce seeds
- Tomato plants
- Pepper plants
- Basil
- Chives
I followed the instructions on the seed packets and the little tags that came with the plants. I dug small holes, placed the seeds or plants in, and covered them up with soil. Then I gave everything a good watering.
The Waiting Game (and Some Maintenance)
Now, it’s mostly a waiting game. I’ve been watering the garden every day, making sure the soil stays moist. I also check for any weeds that pop up and pull them out. I saw a few bugs, so I’ll need to make sure those do not destroy my plants.
I’m excited to see how it all turns out. It’s pretty cool to think that in a few weeks, I might be able to make a salad with stuff I grew myself. It’s a small thing, but it feels good to connect with nature and grow something with my own hands. It might become my hobby.
