Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to make my dog’s kennel a bit more, uh, integrated into my living room, right? It’s always been just this big, clunky thing taking up space. So I thought, why not turn it into an entertainment center? Sounds crazy, but stick with me.

First things first, I measured the heck out of my dog’s current kennel. Length, width, height – you name it. Gotta make sure the new one fits him comfortably. He’s a Doberman Pinscher, so not exactly a small guy. They’re powerful and protective, so his comfort is my top concern. Then, I spent hours online, just browsing, you know? Looking at different entertainment center designs, dog kennels, all that jazz. There are so many options out there, like outdoor kennels with indoor protection and all sorts of designs. I even looked into dog adoption sites for some reason, ha! I found some cool ideas but nothing that really fit what I was envisioning.
So, I decided to design it myself. I grabbed some paper and a pencil, and I just started sketching. Nothing fancy, just trying to get the basic idea down. I wanted it to be sturdy, obviously, but also look nice, like a real piece of furniture. I figured I could use some nice wood, maybe some metal accents. After many different plans, finally I had the one that I’m satisfied with. It is sturdy enough and also looks great! Perfect!
Next up, materials. I hit up the local hardware store – you know, the one with the friendly staff who always seem to know what you need? Yeah, that one. I picked up some lumber, some metal rods for the door, hinges, screws, the whole nine yards. I already had some tools at home, so that saved me some money.
Then came the fun part – building it! I started by cutting the wood to size. Let me tell you, sawing wood is a workout! But it was satisfying, seeing the pieces start to come together. I assembled the frame first, making sure everything was square and level. Then, I added the top, which would be the actual entertainment center part. I made sure to leave space for my TV, speakers, and all that.
The door was a bit tricky. I wanted it to be secure but also easy to open and close. I ended up using metal rods and some heavy-duty hinges. It took some trial and error, but I finally got it working smoothly.
Once the whole thing was built, I sanded it down, stained it a nice dark color, and added a few coats of polyurethane to protect it. I even found this cool metal trim that I added around the edges to give it a bit more of a polished look.

My dog seems to like it, and it looks way better than that old wire cage. It’s like a two-in-one deal, you know?
Oh, and the best part? I added some soft, comfy bedding inside for my furry friend. He loves it! He went right in and made himself at home. It’s like his own little den now, but it also doubles as my entertainment center. Win-win! It’s not perfect, but hey, I made it myself, and it works. Plus, my dog loves it, and that’s all that really matters, right?
It was a lot of work, but totally worth it. I’m pretty proud of how it turned out. Might try to build a matching coffee table next. We’ll see. Anyway, that’s my story. Hope you guys enjoyed it. Maybe it’ll inspire someone else to get creative with their pet furniture!
