Okay, so, today I wanted to mess around with creating a forest gnome wizard, and give him an entertainer’s background. It sounded like fun, and I was curious how it would all come together. It was a bit of a wild ride, but I think I pulled it off!
First off, I started with the basics. Being a forest gnome, this little guy naturally got a +2 to Intelligence. Perfect for a wizard, right? Plus, they have this cool knack for illusions and are naturally stealthy, which I thought could be super interesting for a wizard.
Then, I thought about his personality. I’ve heard people say forest gnomes are usually friendly with other woodland creatures, and they have this natural curiosity and humor about them. So, I wanted to play that up. But, I also wanted him to have a bit of an edge, you know? Not just your typical happy-go-lucky gnome.
So here’s what I did:
- I made him a bit of a show-off. Since he’s an entertainer, I figured he’d love being the center of attention. I imagined him using his illusion spells not just for practical stuff, but also to create these elaborate, flashy displays. Think of him as a bit of a magical showman, always ready to dazzle a crowd.
- I gave him a mischievous streak. Being naturally stealthy, I thought it would be fun if he used his skills to play pranks and maybe get into a little bit of trouble. Nothing too serious, just enough to keep things interesting. I pictured him as the type to sneak around and maybe swap someone’s sugar with salt, just for a laugh.
- I decided he’s a bit of a collector. I’m not sure why, but I got this idea that he’s fascinated by shiny objects and rare trinkets. Maybe he uses his performances as a way to get his hands on these items, or maybe he just likes to have a hidden stash of interesting things. It added another layer to his personality, I think.
- I made sure he’s still got that gnome charm. Even though he’s a bit mischievous and loves to show off, I still wanted him to be likeable. So, I imagined him as having a good heart, always willing to help out a friend in need, especially if they’re a fellow forest creature or someone who appreciates a good joke.
Putting it all together, I ended up with this forest gnome wizard who’s a bit of a flamboyant entertainer, a mischievous prankster, and a secret collector of shiny things. But, deep down, he’s still a good guy with a love for his forest home and a knack for making people laugh. It was a fun exercise, and I think I created a character with a lot of potential for interesting stories.
It was tougher than I thought it would be, balancing all these different aspects of his personality. But, I think it was worth it. It’s easy to fall into the trap of making a character that’s just one thing, like the “grumpy wizard” or the “always cheerful bard.” But real people are more complex than that, right? And I think characters should be, too.
So, yeah, that was my little project for today. It was a good reminder that even with some basic guidelines, you can create a pretty unique and interesting character. The only problem is now I really want to use him in my next D&D section, I got so attached to him.
