Okay, so I wanted to make finding stuff to do in Syracuse way easier. I got tired of digging through a million different websites just to see what’s going on. So, I decided to build my own Syracuse entertainment calendar. Sounds kinda fancy, right? It wasn’t as bad as I thought!

First, I brainstormed. What did I want in a local events calendar? I wanted it to be simple, clean, and show me a variety of things – music, theater, festivals, you name it. I also wanted it to be easy to update, because let’s be real, events change all the time.
The Setup
- I used good old pen and paper, I decided to use a Simple Calendar from online, because my coding skill is still not good.
- I gathered my tools. All free things online, I don’t want to pay anything.
- Then, I spent a good chunk of time just looking at other entertainment calendars. What did I like? What did I hate? This helped me figure out the layout I wanted.
The Building Process
The next step was the real work: finding the events. I started with the bigger venues, you know, the ones that always have something going on. I checked their websites, their social media, all that stuff. It was a lot of copying and pasting, to be honest.
Then I dug deeper. I found some smaller local blogs and community pages that listed more niche events. This was key to getting a good mix of stuff. I even followed a bunch of local Syracuse-related groups to see what people were talking about.
It’s all manual work, I input everything to my Calendar. Make things organized. I also made sure to double-check dates and times, because nobody wants to show up to an event that’s already over!
The Result (So Far!)
It’s still a work in progress, of course. But I’ve got a pretty solid calendar going! It’s easy to see what’s happening on any given day, and I’ve got a good mix of different types of events. I’m still adding new stuff all the time, and I’m trying to figure out how to make it even better.
Honestly, the hardest part was just staying organized. There’s a LOT of information out there, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed. But I’m pretty happy with how it’s turning out. It’s already saving me a ton of time when I’m looking for something to do, and hopefully, it’ll help other people in Syracuse too!
