Alright, so I wanted to switch things up with my volleyball team’s warm-up routine. We’ve been doing the same old drills forever, and it was getting stale. I figured some fun games would get everyone hyped and ready to play. Here’s how it went down.

Kicking Off the Warm-Up
First, I gathered the team and explained that we were going to try some new warm-up games. I could see some skeptical faces, but most were curious. We started with a simple game I call “Pepper with a Twist.”
- Pepper with a Twist:
Basically, it’s your standard pepper drill – you know, bump, set, hit – but I added a rule. Every third hit had to be a different type of touch. So, maybe a tomahawk, a poke, or even a cheeky backhand. This got everyone laughing and loosened things up. It also forced us to think quick and work on ball control.
Moving on to Something More Dynamic
Next up, we tried “Volleyball Tennis.”
- Volleyball Tennis:
I split the team into two smaller groups and set up a mini “court” using cones. Instead of racquets, we used our hands, and the rules were simple. You had to keep the ball in the air, volleyball-style, but it could only bounce once on each side. If you messed up, your team lost a point. This game got our heart rates up and improved our reflexes, plus it was a blast!
Adding a Bit of Friendly Competition
After that, we moved on to “King/Queen of the Court.”
- King/Queen of the Court:
This one’s a classic, but it never gets old. One team starts as the “royalty” on one side of the net, and the other teams line up to challenge them. You play a quick rally, and if the challengers win, they rotate in and become the new royalty. It’s fast-paced and gets everyone fired up to compete.
Finishing Strong with a Fun Challenge
To wrap things up, I introduced a game called “Target Practice.”
- Target Practice:
I placed different sized hoops around the court. Each hoop was worth a different number of points. The team had to serve or hit balls into the hoops to score. It was a good way to work on our accuracy and serving under pressure. Plus, who doesn’t love a good target challenge?
Reflecting on the Experience
After running through these games, I noticed a big difference in our team’s energy. Everyone was more engaged, laughing, and definitely warmed up. It wasn’t just about getting our bodies ready; it was about getting our minds in the game, too.
Switching up our routine with these volleyball warm-up games was a total win. It broke the monotony, improved our skills, and brought a new level of fun to our practices. I’m definitely going to keep these games in our rotation and maybe even try to come up with some new ones. It’s amazing what a little bit of fun competition can do for a team!
