Okay, so, I’ve been messing around with this fantasy basketball thing, and I gotta say, the draft is a beast. There are so many stats to keep track of! Points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, field goal percentage… it’s a lot. I was trying to figure out a way to make it easier, and that’s when I stumbled upon this idea of “punting.”
Basically, punting means you just ignore certain categories. Like, you say, “I’m not even gonna try to win in blocks,” and then you focus on players who are good in other areas. It sounds kinda crazy, but people actually do this! And some folks even say it’s a good strategy, especially for beginners.
Trying it Out
So, I decided to give it a shot. I went into a mock draft and decided to punt field goal percentage and blocks. My thinking was, there are more guards who can grab rebounds than big guys who dish out assists, so I figured I could load up on guards and wings who can score, pass, and rebound. This way, I can focus on players who are always handling the ball.
I started picking players like crazy, focusing on guys who were strong in points, assists, rebounds, and steals. I didn’t even look at their field goal percentage or how many blocks they got. Honestly, it felt kinda weird at first, like I was doing something wrong. But as the draft went on, I started to see the logic.
The Result
By the end of the draft, I had a team that was stacked in points, assists, and steals. But my field goal percentage and blocks? Let’s just say they weren’t pretty. According to the draft tool, I was projected to win most of the categories I focused on, but I was gonna get smoked in those other two. But hey, that was the plan, right?
- First try: punted FG% and blocks, loaded up on guards and wings.
- Second try: Focused on players who were strong in PTS, AST, REB, and STL.
- Result: Dominated in the categories I cared about, but got crushed in the punted ones.
Now, I know this is just a mock draft, and things might be different in a real league. Some smart people say that it’s really hard to win if you punt more than one category in roto leagues. They also say that punting is easier in auction drafts.
Plus, someone said that punting steals isn’t the most exciting strategy. Maybe that’s true, but I’m just trying to figure this whole thing out. I even saw some rankings from last year that showed how players did when you punted different categories. I guess it’s not a totally crazy idea.
I’m not sure if this punting thing is gonna be my go-to strategy, but it’s definitely something I’m gonna keep experimenting with. It’s kinda fun to try something different, and it definitely makes the draft a lot less overwhelming. Maybe I’ll try punting just one category next time and see how that goes. Who knows, maybe I’ll become a punting master someday! Haha!
