Okay, so I wanted to get into volleyball, right? But I’m a total beginner. I mean, I’ve seen it played, but that’s about it. So, I figured the best way to start was with some super basic games, just to get a feel for things. I’m going to write down how I try to learn these beginner volleyball games.

First Steps: Finding Some Friends (Or Not!)
First, I tried to round up some friends. Turns out, most of them are as clueless about volleyball as I am. That’s actually kind of perfect, though! We’re all starting from zero. We found a local park with a net – score!
Game 1: “Keep It Up”
- Goal: Literally just keep the ball in the air.
- How it went: Hilarious. We slapped at the ball, it went sideways, it hit faces… it was a mess. But we were laughing the whole time. We counted how many times we could hit it before it hit the ground. Our record was, like, five. Pathetic, but hey, it’s a start!
Game 2: “Over the Net (Eventually)”
- Goal: Try to get the ball over the net, back and forth.
- How to do: We started close to the net. One person would try so hard to gently toss the ball over, and the person on the other side would try to bump/hit/whatever it back.
- How it went: Slightly less chaotic than “Keep It Up.” We actually managed a few rallies! It felt amazing when we got, like, three hits in a row over the net. We weren’t worrying about proper form or anything, just trying to make contact and get it over. I did a lot of weird arm flailing.
Game 3: “Target Practice”
- Goal: Get the ball over the net and to the wanted person.
- How to do: One Person A act as a “setter” and tosses the ball up in the air (not too high, not too far). Person B try to hit the ball.
- How it went: Surprisingly challenging! I learned that aiming the ball is WAY harder than it looks. I Mostly, the ball went anywhere.
Game 4: Mini games
- Goal: We split into 2 vs 2.
- How to do: Using all we have tried before.
- How it went: We looked like a bunch of awkward ducklings trying to fly, but it was FUN. We celebrated every point like we’d won the Olympics.
My takeaway from this whole beginner volleyball adventure? It’s harder than it looks, but also way more fun than I expected. Don’t be afraid to look silly, and just focus on getting the ball over the net (somehow!). It’s all about baby steps. And finding friends who are just as bad as you are makes it even better. Next time, I want to try and get better at that “bump” thing… wish me luck!
