Okay, so I wanted to get into beach volleyball, you know, get some sun, some exercise. But first, I needed to figure out the actual rules. It’s not just hitting a ball over a net, right?

Digging into the Rules
First, I started with a basic online search. Nothing fancy, just “beach volleyball rules.” I found some official-looking documents, but they were kind of dense. So, I looked for something a little simpler, something geared towards beginners like me.
I stumbled upon a few websites and some videos that broke things down pretty well. Here’s the gist of what I learned:
- Teams: Usually, it’s 2 on 2. Makes sense, keeps things moving.
- Scoring: It’s rally scoring, meaning you get a point every time the play ends, no matter who served. Most games are to 21, and you gotta win by 2.
- Serving: You can serve from anywhere behind the back line. And get this – the net is your friend! If the serve hits the net and goes over, it’s still good.
- Touching the Ball: Each team gets a max of three hits to get the ball back over.
- Blocking: Here’s a tricky one. A block at the net does count as one of your three hits, different from indoor volleyball.
- Setting: You are allowed to open hand it over the net!
Putting it into Practice(Sort of)
I’ll be honest, I haven’t played a real, competitive game yet. But I did grab a friend, and we went to the beach to just mess around. We tried to follow the rules as best we could, and it was… interesting.
Counting the hits, remembering the block rule, that took some concentration! We definitely messed up a bunch, but hey, that’s part of learning. And the setting it over rule? Much harder when someone isn’t gently tossing it to you.
It was more exercise than I was expecting, too. My legs were feeling the sand. I’m looking forward to playing it again, maybe with a coach to help with the rules.
