Alright, so, I heard about the Alberta Winter Games and thought, “Why not give volleyball a shot?” I mean, I’ve played a bit in high school, nothing serious, but it seemed like a fun way to get involved in the community and maybe meet some new people.
First off, I needed to find out how to even sign up. I did a bit of digging online and found the official website for the games. Turns out, you gotta register through your local sports association. I contacted the one in my area and they gave me the lowdown on what I needed to do. Filled out some forms, paid a small fee, and boom, I was officially registered for the volleyball tryouts.
Now, I haven’t played seriously in a while, so I figured I should probably get back in shape. I started by doing some basic drills – you know, practicing my serves, bumping, setting, all that jazz. I even roped in a few friends for some casual games at the local park. It was a blast, and honestly, it felt good to be active again.
Tryouts day arrived, and I was a little nervous, I won’t lie. There were a bunch of people there, all looking pretty serious. We got split into groups and did some drills, followed by a few scrimmages. I tried my best, made a few good plays, and also messed up a couple of times. But hey, that’s part of the game, right?
A few days later, I got the email – I made the team! I was stoked. We started practicing regularly, getting to know each other, and figuring out our strengths and weaknesses as a team. Our coach was great, really pushed us to improve but also made sure we were having fun.
Game Time!
The actual games were a whole different experience. The energy, the competition, it was intense! We played against teams from all over Alberta. Some games we won, some we lost, but through it all, we kept our spirits high and supported each other.
- First game: We were all a bit jittery, but we managed to pull through and win!
- Second game: Tougher opponents, we lost this one, but it was a close one.
- Third game: We were on fire! Played our best game yet and secured a solid victory.
We didn’t end up winning the whole thing, but honestly, that wasn’t the point. It was about the experience, the teamwork, the friendships we made along the way. I’m really glad I decided to participate in the Alberta Winter Games. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, got me back into a sport I enjoy, and introduced me to some awesome people. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a fun and challenging experience.
