Okay, so today I decided to dive back into the world of retro gaming and mess around with an NES emulator. Specifically, I wanted to play the old Volleyball game. It’s a classic, you know?

First things first, I needed an emulator. I already have FCEUX installed on my laptop, ’cause it is a pretty solid one for NES games. If you don’t have it, it’s easily gettable from their website.
Next, I needed the ROM. I found a site, got the Volleyball (U) [!].nes ROM, and downloaded it. Gotta be careful with ROM sites, though. Always scan for viruses, just in case.
After downloading, I unzipped the file. I like to keep things organized, so I put the .nes file in my “NES ROMs” folder. Makes it easier to find later.
Firing Up the Game
I opened FCEUX, and then it’s just File > Open ROM. I navigated to my “NES ROMs” folder, selected the Volleyball ROM, and boom! The game started right up. No problem at all.
I played a few rounds, and man, it brought back memories! The controls are super simple:
- D-pad: Used to move my player around the court.
- A button: Used it to jump. Timing is key for blocking and spiking!
- B button: Used it to bump/set the ball.
It took a little bit to get the timing down again, especially for spiking. I kept hitting the ball out of bounds at first. But after a few games, I was getting the hang of it. I even managed to win a few matches against the computer!

I’m think I will be spend more time reliving some of those classic NES games in the coming days! It’s a fun way to kill time, and it definitely takes you back.
