Okay, so the other day I was trying to figure out how long my niece’s high school volleyball game would be. I wanted to be there for the whole thing, but you know, life is busy! So, I started digging around to get a handle on it.

My Little Investigation
First, I tried to remember my own high school days… which, let’s be honest, was a while ago. I couldn’t recall exactly how long those games lasted. My memory’s a little fuzzy, blame it on old age!
Then, I hit up some forums and websites and stuff. I needed to find some solid info, not just guesses, you know?
- I learned that high school volleyball matches are usually “best-of-five” sets. That means the first team to win three sets wins the whole match.
- I found out that, unlike college or pro games, high school sets go to 25 points, but you gotta win by two points. So, it could be 25-23, or 26-24, or even longer if it’s super close!
- The first four sets always follow that rule, and only get to 25 points and win by 2.
- Also, I discovered, if they need a fifth set, that one’s a little different. It only goes to 15 points, still with the win-by-two rule.
Putting It All Together
So, based on my “research,” I figured each set could take anywhere from, like, 15 to 30 minutes, maybe even longer if it’s a real nail-biter.
Because,if the teams are evenly matched and keep trading points, it could drag on.
Then, I added some time for warm-ups, breaks between sets, and any potential timeouts. Those things always add up, right?

Finally, I estimated the whole match could be anywhere from a quick 45 minutes (if one team totally dominates) to a much longer two hours, or possibly even more, especially if it goes to all five sets and they’re all close games.
So yeah, that is how I finally realized, I figured it’s better to block off a good chunk of time to make sure to catch the whole match and support my niece. Go, team!
