Okay, so I’ve been getting into volleyball lately, both playing and watching, and one thing I kept wondering was, “How long do these games actually last?” It felt like some went on forever, while others were over in a flash. So, I decided to do some digging and timing of my own to get to the bottom of it.

Figuring Out the Basics
First, I had to understand the scoring system. I learned that most volleyball matches are best-of-five sets. That means the first team to win three sets wins the match. And the set point for a team to win a set is usually 25 points, but the team needs to win by at least two points. The fifth set, if they even get there, only goes to 15 points. Again, you need to win by two.
My Timing Experiment
I started by watching some recorded professional matches online. I grabbed my phone, opened the stopwatch app, and got ready to time each set. I made a simple note for start time and end time and write down the scores too, just to get a sense of how close the games were.
- Match 1: This one was a nail-biter! It went all the way to five sets.
- Set 1: 25-22 (lasted about 28 minutes)
- Set 2: 21-25 (around 26 minutes)
- Set 3: 25-19 (a bit quicker, 23 minutes)
- Set 4: 23-25 (back to 27 minutes)
- Set 5: 15-13 (the shortest, at 16 minutes)
- Total time: 28 + 26 + 23+ 27 + 16 = 120min
- Match 2: Set 1: 25-20. Set 2: 25-23. Set 3: 26-24. Total time is 75min.
- Match 3: Set 1: 26-24. Set 2: 18-25. Set 3: 25-21. Set 4: 25-19. Total time is 88min.
What I Discovered
After timing a bunch of matches and doing some quick math, a couple of things stood out:
- Most individual sets lasted between 20 and 30 minutes.
- The closer the score, the longer the set, obviously, because of that win-by-two rule.
- If a match goes to all five sets, it can easily take over two hours.
- But if it’s a straight-sets victory (3-0), it might be closer to an hour or an hour and a half.
So, there’s no one simple answer, the length really depends on how competitive the match is. I can say that planning for at least an hour and a half is a safe bet, but be prepared for longer if it’s a close one!
