Okay, so today I decided to dig into the history of volleyball. It’s a game I’ve played casually, but I never really knew where it came from. Time to change that!

Start My Research
First, I opened my browser and typed in “history of volleyball”. I figured that would be the best way to get a general overview, and I was right. I found several sports websites and history pages that popped up.
Gathering Information
I started skimming through a few articles. I learned the basics pretty quickly. It all started with this guy named William G. Morgan, back in 1895. Apparently, he was a YMCA physical education director in Massachusetts.
I dug a little deeper. I discovered that Morgan wanted to create a game that was less intense than basketball, something that older members of the YMCA could play. I jotted that down – less intense, good for all ages, invented at a YMCA.
- Invented by: William G. Morgan
- Year: 1895
- Location: Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA
- Original Name: Mintonette
I also read that the name “volleyball” came a bit later. Someone at a demonstration match remarked that the players were “volleying” the ball back and forth, and the name stuck. I thought that was a pretty cool origin story for the name!
Spread and Evolution of the Game
It seems like it spread pretty quickly. I found articles talking about the game’s spread through the YMCA network, to colleges, and eventually, internationally. My notes became a mess of dates and locations. I noted down: spread through YMCAs, schools, and then countries.
Next, I got into how the rules evolved. The first rules were super basic, and the game has changed a lot since then. I found some old rule books! I can’t believe how simple it was. Now the sport becomes very popular!

Wrapping Up
So, that’s my journey into the history of volleyball. From a simple idea in a YMCA gym to a global sport. It’s amazing, It took more time than I thought to organize everything, I am glad to have done it.
