Okay, so I’ve been messing around with volleyball lately, trying to up my game. I wouldn’t say I’m good, but I’m definitely trying to get better. And let me tell you, it’s been a journey, a real game changer!

Getting Started (and Failing Miserably)
First, I started by just… showing up. You know, finding some local pickup games. I figured, “How hard can it be?” Famous last words, right? I spent most of the first few games just chasing the ball, completely whiffing on serves, and generally being a liability to whatever poor team I ended up on. My sets were all over the place, my spikes usually ended up in the net (or, worse, out of bounds), and my digs… well, let’s just say I spent a lot of time picking myself up off the ground.
The Practice Grind
I realized pretty quickly that just showing up wasn’t going to cut it. So, I started actually practicing. I found some drills online – you know, the basic stuff: pepper, setting against a wall, practicing my approach. I even bought a cheap volleyball net for my backyard.
- Pepper: This was the most helpful, I think. Just me and a friend, passing, setting, and hitting back and forth. It really helped me get a feel for the ball.
- Wall Sets: Boring, but necessary. I just stood there, setting the ball against the wall over and over again. It helped with consistency, I guess.
- Approach Practice: I looked like an idiot, running and jumping in my backyard, but it helped me work on my timing and footwork.
- Serving:I spent hours and hours, serving the ball and chasing to get it back, and repeat and repeat.
It was tedious, honestly. And I felt pretty silly sometimes, practicing all alone. But I kept at it, a little bit each day.
Seeing (Small) Improvements
Slowly, very slowly, I started to see some improvement. My sets were getting a little more consistent. I wasn’t whiffing on serves quite as often. I even managed to get a few decent spikes in during games.
It got better and better,I could even join a local game and play normally with others.
Still a Work in Progress (But It’s Fun!)
I’m still not amazing, not by a long shot. But I’m definitely better than I was. And, more importantly, I’m having fun! It’s actually pretty cool to see the progress, to feel myself getting a little bit better each time I play. It’s a challenge, for sure, but a rewarding one.
It’s really changed my game, and I enjoy it more than ever!
