Okay, so today I wanted to spice up our volleyball practice, focusing on serving. I figured we’d ditch the usual drills and try some fun games instead. I had a few ideas, but honestly, it was a bit of a trial-and-error process.

Getting Started
First, I gathered the team and explained the plan. Everyone seemed pretty stoked about trying something new. We started with a simple warm-up, just some light jogging and dynamic stretching to get the blood flowing. I wanted to make sure everyone was loose and ready to go, you know, to avoid any silly injuries.
Game 1: Target Practice
My first idea was a game I called “Target Practice.” I grabbed a bunch of cones and placed them at different spots on the opposite side of the court. The idea was simple: each player gets a set number of serves, and they earn points based on where their serve lands. Hitting a cone gets you extra points.
- Setup: Cones placed strategically on the court.
- Gameplay: Players take turns serving, aiming for the cones or designated areas.
- Scoring: Points awarded for hitting cones or landing serves in specific zones.
We played a few rounds, and it was pretty fun! Everyone was really focused on their aim, and there was a lot of good-natured competition. I noticed that some players were naturally better at hitting certain spots, which was cool to see.
Game 2: Serving Relay
Next up, I wanted something that involved a bit more teamwork. So, I came up with a “Serving Relay.” I divided the team into two groups. Each team lined up behind the service line. The first player in each line served, then ran to the back of their line. The next player then served, and so on.
- Setup: Divide the team into two or more equal groups.
- Gameplay: It’s a simple relay, first team with all members who have served and returned to their line wins!
- Challenge: If a serve goes bad, the server must run and grab it and take the serve again.
This was a bit more chaotic, in a good way! There was lots of cheering and encouragement. It definitely got our heart rates up, and it was a great way to work on serving under pressure. Plus, it was just plain fun to watch everyone scramble around.

Mixing it Up: Adapting on the Fly
The next games I planned went a little different. I mixed in a few errors on purpose. I served into the net, served way out of bounds, and even messed up my toss a few times. It gave the other players a chance to see how they’d react to those unexpected serves. It keeps them on their toes.
Wrapping Up
We finished up with a quick cool-down and some stretching. Overall, I think the practice was a success. We got to work on our serving skills in a fun and engaging way, and everyone seemed to have a good time. I’m definitely going to try incorporating more games like these into our future practices. It’s a great way to keep things fresh and exciting, and it helps us improve our skills without even realizing we’re working hard!
