Okay, so my niece turned sixteen, and you know what that means – Sweet 16 time! I volunteered to handle the entertainment, thinking, “How hard could it be?” Turns out, it’s a bit more than just throwing on a playlist.

Brainstorming & Planning
First, I sat down with my niece, Sarah, to get a feel for what she wanted. We talked about her favorite music, her friends, and the overall vibe she was going for. She wanted something fun, energetic, and definitely Instagram-worthy. We made a list together.
- DJ or Live Band?
- Photo Booth – Yay or Nay?
- Games? What kind?
- Any special requests?
After our chat, I started researching. I looked up local DJs, bands, photo booth rental companies, and even some party game ideas online. I made a bunch of phone calls, got some quotes, and compared prices. It was a bit overwhelming, to be honest.
Making Decisions
We decided to go with a DJ because it offered more flexibility with the music. Sarah picked a DJ she liked based on their online mixes. We also booked a photo booth – a must-have for any Sweet 16, apparently. The props they offered were hilarious!
For games, we kept it simple. We set up a giant Jenga, a cornhole toss (which I painted with some sparkly paint to make it more “festive”), and a DIY karaoke station using a laptop and a microphone. I figured this way, there was something for everyone.
The Big Day
On the day of the party, I arrived early to help set up. The DJ arrived and got his equipment ready. The photo booth company showed up and assembled their booth. I laid out the games and made sure everything looked good.
Once the guests started arriving, the party really took off. The DJ played a great mix of music that kept everyone dancing. The photo booth was a HUGE hit – people were lining up to take silly pictures with the props. Even the “older” folks (like me!) got in on the fun.

The games were also a success. The giant Jenga got pretty competitive, and the karaoke station brought out some surprisingly good (and some hilariously bad) singers.
Wrapping Up
By the end of the night, everyone was tired but happy. Sarah told me it was the “best party ever,” which, of course, made all the planning worthwhile. It wasn’t perfect – there were a few minor hiccups- but overall It’s my success.
My biggest takeaway? Planning a Sweet 16 is a lot of work, but seeing the birthday girl and her friends having a blast makes it all worth it. Just be prepared to do your research, make some decisions, and be flexible on the day of!
