Okay, so the other day I was browsing online, looking for some new sports to try, and I stumbled upon this thing called “Futevôlei” – basically, Brazilian beach volleyball but you can’t use your hands. Sounds crazy, right? I was instantly hooked and just had to give it a shot.
My First Attempt at Futevôlei
First, I watched a bunch of YouTube videos. The pros make it look so effortless, flying through the air, kicking the ball over the net with insane precision. I, on the other hand, am not quite so graceful, to put it mildly.
Next, I needed a ball and a net. Luckily, I already had a volleyball, and I figured I could just use my backyard badminton net for a makeshift setup. It wasn’t regulation height, but hey, I was just starting out.
- Find a partner. This proved harder than I expected. Most of my friends aren’t super into trying obscure sports on a whim. Finally,I bribed…I mean, persuaded my younger brother to join me.
- Set up the “court.” This involved clearing a patch of grass, setting up the badminton net, and mentally preparing for inevitable humiliation.
Then came the actual playing. Oh boy. Let me tell you, keeping that ball in the air using only your feet, chest, and head is WAY harder than it looks. My first few attempts involved a lot of flailing, whiffing, and the ball bouncing pathetically off my shins.
My brother wasn’t much better. We spent a good hour just trying to get a decent rally going. We bumped our heads, tripped over our own feet, and generally looked like a pair of uncoordinated clowns. There was a lot of laughing, mostly at ourselves.
Slowly but surely, though, we started to get the hang of it. We managed a few short rallies, and even pulled off a couple of (very clumsy) “spikes.” It was exhilarating! Even though we were terrible, it was so much fun.
By the end of the day, we were exhausted, sore, and covered in grass stains. But we also felt a sense of accomplishment. We had tried something new, stepped outside our comfort zones, and had a blast doing it. I’m definitely going to keep practicing. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll even be able to do one of those cool overhead kicks without falling flat on my face.
So, if you’re looking for a new, challenging, and hilarious sport to try, I highly recommend giving Futevôlei a go. Just be prepared to look silly for a while – it’s all part of the fun!
