Okay, so today I wanted to mess around with something totally different – Aztec football uniforms. I’ve always been fascinated by ancient cultures, and the Aztecs are just so cool. Plus, football is my jam, so combining the two? Let’s get this started!

First thing I did was hit up some image searches. I needed to get a feel for the traditional Aztec look. You know, the feathers, the bold colors, the patterns. I spent a good hour just scrolling through pictures of Aztec warriors, art, and historical stuff.
Then I started sketching. I grabbed my notepad and pencil, nothing fancy, and began roughing out some ideas. My first thought was to make the helmet look like a jaguar’s head, because, why not? Jaguars were super important to the Aztecs, representing strength and power. I sketched out a few different helmet designs, trying to get the jaguar features right while still keeping it functional looking.
Next up, the jersey. I wanted to incorporate some of those classic Aztec patterns, but I also didn’t want it to look too busy. I decided to go with a simple base color – a deep red, like the color of dried blood, which was often used in Aztec ceremonies. Then I added some geometric patterns along the shoulders and down the sides, using gold and turquoise, colors often found in their artwork. The numbers on the back? I made them look like they were carved out of stone, just for that extra touch.
For the pants, I kept it relatively simple. I figured a solid color would work best, maybe a dark brown or black. But I did add a little flair with a feathered trim around the bottom, kind of like the leg warmers football players wear, but way cooler.
- Helmet: Jaguar head design, incorporating traditional Aztec symbols for protection.
- Jersey: Deep red base with gold and turquoise geometric patterns on shoulders and sides. Numbers designed to resemble carved stone.
- Pants: Solid dark brown or black with feathered trim around the bottom.
The whole process took me a few hours. I redid some parts a couple of times, especially the helmet. Getting the jaguar head to look right without being cartoonish was tricky. But in the end, I think I came up with something pretty cool. It’s definitely a unique take on a football uniform, and I think it captures the spirit of the Aztec warriors while still looking like it belongs on the gridiron.
This was a fun little project. It reminded me how much I enjoy just letting my imagination run wild. Maybe I’ll try designing uniforms based on other ancient cultures next. Roman gladiators, anyone?
