Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to do this project for a while now, and today I finally got around to it. It’s all about giving an old Appalachian State football helmet a fresh look. Let me tell you, it was quite the journey, but I’m pretty stoked with how it turned out.

Getting Started
First things first, I gathered all the materials I needed. This included the old helmet, of course, some sandpaper, primer, a few different colors of paint, and some sealant. I also made sure I had a clean workspace, because things were about to get messy.
Prepping the Helmet
Before I could even think about painting, I had to prep the helmet. This involved removing all the old decals and giving it a good cleaning. Then came the fun part – sanding! I started with a coarser grit sandpaper to get rid of any rough spots and then moved to a finer grit to smooth everything out. It was a bit of an arm workout, but it’s super important to get a nice, even surface for the paint to adhere to.
Priming
Once the helmet was all sanded and smooth, it was time for primer. I applied a couple of thin coats, making sure to let each coat dry completely before applying the next. This created a good base for the paint and helped to ensure that the colors would really pop.
Painting
Now for the exciting part – painting! I had a pretty clear design in mind, so I carefully taped off the areas I didn’t want to paint with the first color. Then, I sprayed on a few thin coats of the base color, again letting each coat dry completely. After that, I removed the tape and repeated the process with the other colors, building up the design layer by layer.
Adding Details
Once the main colors were down, I added some details by hand using a small brush. It’s not perfect, but I think those details really give the helmet some character.
Sealing
Finally, to protect all that hard work, I applied a few coats of sealant. This will help to prevent the paint from chipping or fading, and it also gives the helmet a nice, glossy finish.

The Finished Product
And there you have it! My newly painted Appalachian State football helmet. It was a lot of work, but it was totally worth it. I’m really happy with how it turned out, and it’s definitely a unique piece that I’ll treasure for years to come. It might not be perfect, but that’s part of the charm, right? It’s got that handmade, one-of-a-kind vibe to it.
If any of you are thinking about tackling a similar project, my advice is to just go for it! It’s a really rewarding experience, and you might surprise yourself with what you can create.
