Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to get more into volleyball lately, but the problem is, I rarely have enough people around for a proper game. Usually, it’s just me and one other person. We didn’t want to give up, so we started messing around with different ways to play 2-person volleyball. Let me tell you, it’s way more fun than you’d think!
Setting Up
First off, we tried playing on a regular-sized court. Yeah, that was a disaster. Way too much running around, and we were both gassed after like five minutes. So, we decided to shrink the court. We just used some cones we had lying around to mark out a smaller area, maybe about a third of the normal size. That made things much more manageable.
Gameplay Tweaks
Next up, the rules. Obviously, regular volleyball rules don’t really work with just two people. Here’s what we figured out:
- Serving: We just took turns serving. No need to get fancy with rotations or anything.
- Touches: We decided to allow a maximum of three touches per side, just like in regular volleyball. This was key to being able to set up at least some attempt at an attack.
- Scoring: We played to 11 points, win by 2. Simple enough.
Different Game Modes
Once we had the basics down, we started getting creative with different game modes. Here are a few we came up with:
- “Pepper” with a twist: Basically, we started with a serve, then just kept hitting the ball back and forth, trying to keep it in play. But instead of just passing, we tried to incorporate setting and hitting.
- “King/Queen of the Court”: This one is a classic. We served and then played out the point. Whoever won the point stayed on the court and the other person rotated off. We would keep playing with different partners, always keeping track of points individually.
- “Target Practice”: We set up some targets on the court (like buckets or just spots on the ground) and tried to hit them with our serves or attacks.
It might sound kind of basic, but honestly, we had a blast. We got a great workout, improved our skills, and just generally enjoyed the game. If you’re ever stuck with just one other person and a volleyball, give these a try! You might be surprised at how much fun you have.
These were some great exercises. We plan to find more and keep playing!
