Okay, so, I was messing around online and stumbled upon this interesting question: “What percentage of NFL referees have other jobs?” It got me thinking, so I started digging.
First, I searched around a little bit, you know, just to get a general idea. Turns out, being an NFL ref is actually a part-time gig. Crazy, right? These guys you see on TV, making all those big calls, they’re not doing it full-time. Most of them have other jobs, some pretty high-profile, apparently.
Then I found out there are only 121 of these officials in the whole NFL. That’s a pretty small number when you think about it. It’s like a super exclusive club. During the football season, these guys are putting in some serious work. I read that they typically work like 20-25 hours a week, but that doesn’t even include all the time they spend traveling to and from games. The head refs, the guys in charge, they’re clocking in even more, like 30-35 hours a week.
- It’s not just showing up on game day, either.
- They have to review the previous game, see what they did right, what they did wrong.
- And then they have to get ready for the next game, studying up on the teams and all that.
I also learned about the different types of officials. Besides the referee, there’s the umpire (U), the down judge (DJ), and the side judge (SJ). I guess each one has their own special duties during the game. It seems each position has it’s own task and responsibility on the field, making sure that everything goes smoothly.
So, yeah, it’s pretty interesting to find out that these NFL refs are basically living double lives. They’ve got their regular jobs, and then they’ve got this whole other world where they’re officiating these huge football games. I am still trying to find out what exact percentage of them have other jobs, maybe some of them are rich enough to not have to work, and some may have no other choice. I will keep my eyes on it.
