Alright, so today I’m gonna chat about something I was messing around with the other day: figuring out how many points you need to win a volleyball game. It sounds simple, right? But I wanted to be absolutely sure, and honestly, I kinda wanted to double-check I hadn’t completely forgotten the rules since the last time I played.

First thing I did was just, you know, think about it. I remember playing ages ago, and it felt like it took forever to win a match. So, I started by trying to recall the basics. I knew you had to win by two, and I thought the target score was 25, but my memory’s not what it used to be.
Next, I decided to hit up the internet. I figured it was the quickest way to confirm things. I just Googled something like “volleyball winning score” and boom, a bunch of results popped up. I skimmed through a few, making sure I wasn’t looking at some weird variation of volleyball.
What I found confirmed my initial thought, mostly. For the first four sets in a standard volleyball match, you gotta reach 25 points to win. And you gotta win by at least two points. So, if it’s 24-24, you keep playing until one team gets two points ahead.
But then, there’s the fifth set, the tie-breaker. This one’s different. You only need 15 points to win, but the whole “win by two” thing still applies. So, same deal, if it gets to 14-14, you keep going until someone’s up by two.
To make sure I really understood it, I started thinking through some hypothetical scenarios. Like, what if the score was 26-24 in the first set? That’s a win, right? Yep. And what if it was 15-13 in the fifth set? That’s also a win. I basically just walked myself through a few different situations to make sure everything clicked.
I even tried explaining it to my dog, Sparky. He didn’t seem that interested, but hey, at least I got to say it out loud. Talking it through helped solidify it in my brain.

So, after all that, here’s the deal:
- First four sets: 25 points to win, win by two.
- Fifth set (tie-breaker): 15 points to win, win by two.
That’s pretty much it. Now I’m ready to, uh, sit on the couch and watch volleyball on TV. Maybe order a pizza. It’s all about the research, right?
