Okay, so let me tell you about my first volleyball game. Man, was I nervous!

First off, I signed up for this rec league with some friends. I hadn’t really played volleyball since, like, middle school gym class. Figured it would be a fun way to get some exercise and hang out. We called ourselves “The Blockheads,” real original, I know.
Leading up to the game, we practiced a few times. Mostly just bumping the ball around, trying to remember the rules. Honestly, we were pretty terrible. Lots of shanking and miscommunication. We’re talking epic fails here!
Game day arrived, and I was a mess. Butterflies in my stomach, palms sweating. We showed up at the gym, and our opponents looked like they actually knew what they were doing. Great.
The whistle blew, and the game started. I was in the back row, praying the ball wouldn’t come my way. Of course, it did. I tried to bump it, but it went straight up in the air. Someone else on my team managed to save it, thank goodness.
Things didn’t get much better from there. We struggled to get any points. Our serves were weak, our passes were all over the place, and our spikes were non-existent. The other team was just way better than us. They were diving, setting, and spiking like pros. We looked like a bunch of clowns.
I think I actually managed to bump the ball correctly maybe twice the whole game. I even attempted a serve that didn’t go into the net! Small victories, right?

We lost, badly. Like, really badly. But honestly, it was still kind of fun. We were laughing the whole time, even when we were getting crushed.
After the game, we all went out for pizza and beer. We talked about all the mistakes we made and how we were going to improve for the next game. We probably won’t win the league, but hey, at least we’re having a good time.
- Signed up for the league
- Practiced (poorly)
- Showed up nervous
- Played (and lost)
- Ate pizza and beer
So yeah, that was my first volleyball game. A complete disaster, but a fun disaster. I’m already looking forward to the next one! We’ll probably still lose, but hopefully we’ll be a little less terrible.
